My Journey into the Energy Sector: More Than One Path

My Journey into the Energy Sector: More Than One Path

Did you know that the energy sector is not only for engineers? I didn’t either  until I lived it myself. I remember my early days working around aviation fuel operations in Senegal, wondering how I had ended up in an industry I once thought was reserved for highly technical profiles. That experience changed everything I believed about energy careers. In this blog, I want to share how my journey unfolded, what surprised me along the way, and why more young people should take a closer look at this industry.

Starting in the Downstream Sector

My career began in Senegal in the downstream sector, working around aviation fuel operations. From day one, I was struck by how much the job depended on people skills just as much as technical knowledge. Teamwork, communication, and coordination were everything. I quickly learned that keeping operations running smoothly required everyone  from different backgrounds and roles  pulling in the same direction.

Growing Across Different Areas

As my experience grew, I had the chance to work across logistics, operations, finance, and HR support. Each move taught me something new about how energy companies actually function as a whole. More than anything, it showed me how valuable adaptability is the ability to step into a new environment, learn quickly, and contribute meaningfully is a skill the industry genuinely values.

A Moment That Opened My Eyes

Attending events like the Africa Oil, Gas and Energy conference ADIPEC and the MSGBC Energy Forum which focuses on energy development across Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Conakry completely shifted my perspective. I sat in rooms with professionals from across the world, heard about projects transforming energy access in Africa, and had conversations that made me realise how fast this industry is moving. I left those events more motivated than I had arrived, and more certain that I wanted to grow within this sector.

You Don’t Need One Specific Path

One of the biggest misconceptions I encounter is that energy careers are only for engineers or scientists. I used to think that too. But the reality is that the sector needs communicators, finance professionals, logistics coordinators, project managers, and many more. When I started connecting with colleagues in roles very different from mine, I realised that the energy industry is far broader and more welcoming than most young people imagine.

What the Journey Has Taught Me

The most important lesson I’ve taken from my career so far is to stay curious. Every role I stepped into, every conversation I had at an industry event, every challenge I worked through  all of it contributed to who I am professionally today. Investing in your own development, even in small ways, consistently opens doors you didn’t know existed.

Where Could Your Journey Take You?

The energy sector in Africa is evolving rapidly, and that means real opportunities for the next generation of professionals. You don’t need to have everything figured out. Start exploring, say yes to new experiences, and trust that your unique background brings value. What skills do you already have that could take you further than you think?
