Nuclear power today

Nuclear power supplies roughly one-tenth of global electricity generation.

It’s also used in:

  • Food preservation

But not everyone agrees on nuclear power.

Some countries, like Germany, have decided to move away from it. Concerns include safety, cost and what to do with radioactive waste.

A smaller idea

What if nuclear power stations didn’t have to be so big? Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are compact versions of traditional nuclear plants. They follow the same strict safety rules — but are designed differently. Some designs could even be built underground.


Why make them smaller?

SMRs aim to improve four key areas:

1. Safety

Smaller reactors may be easier to control and manage.

2. Cost

They can be built in factories and assembled on site, which could reduce construction time and cost.

3. Size

They take up less space than traditional nuclear power stations.

4. Flexibility

They could be installed in more locations and added in stages as energy demand grows.

The Bottom Line

Small Modular Reactors are compact nuclear power stations designed to be safer, cheaper and more flexible. They’re still being developed — but they could change how nuclear energy fits into the future energy system.
