The UK Government has announced radical new climate change commitments that will set the country on course to cut carbon emission by 78% by 2035.

But how will the UK achieve this?

Hitting the targets would require more electric cars, low-carbon heating, renewable electricity and, for many, cutting down on meat and dairy.

Homes will need to be much better insulated, and people will be encouraged to drive less and walk and cycle more.

The prime minister's commitments, which will become law, bring forward the current target for reducing carbon emissions by 15 years which would put the UK in a world-leading position.

For the first time, the climate law will be extended to cover international aviation and shipping, meaning that aviation is also likely to become more expensive for frequent fliers.

The UK's new commitments come after an announcement from the International Energy Agency that a huge surge in CO2 emissions from energy is expected this year, as the world recovers from the pandemic.
