Applications for the 2022 OGTAP intake are now open!

Applications for this year’s Oil and Gas Technical Apprenticeship Programme (OGTAP) are now open!

Are you a hands-on learner? Do you learn best by getting stuff done? There are plenty of energy career paths to suit you – including the OGTAP apprenticeship scheme

The OGTAP scheme allows you to attend college (working towards your qualifications) whilst gaining practical training on the job – working alongside OGTAP sponsoring businesses, such as BP, Worley, and Shell.

OGTAP has been around since 1999 – with more than 2000 people completing their four-year apprenticeship in various disciplines such as instrument and control, electrical maintenance, mechanical maintenance, and process operations.

Split into two stages, you will spend the first 21 months of your apprenticeship at one of three appointed colleges across Scotland. This is where you’ll gain your qualifications and learn everything you need to know about the industry. Your college experience will be split into two sections – studying theory in a classroom setting and learning in a practical environment.

Kirsty Harrison, a first-year instrumentation and control maintenance apprentice, enjoys practical based activities. She said, “Once more competent with the tasks carried out in the workshop, we are then able to perform these outside on the rig. The rig simulates a real-life system and allows us to get a better knowledge and understanding of why we’re doing what we’re doing…”

You can hear more from our OGTAP apprentices here.

Then, after college, you will spend two years with a sponsoring energy company – receiving expert training and mentoring, gaining industry specific skills as well as SQA Qualifications.

As an OGTAP Apprentice, you’ll have the opportunity to learn your chosen discipline inside and out – as well as all the other skills that come with a real-life job. Then, when you have completed your apprenticeship, you’ll be qualified and ready to transition into a full-time career, with a number of opportunities available to you across the world.

Applications will close on Friday 25th March 2022.
