Embracing your Energy Career: A Journey of Ups, Downs, and Personal Growth

An energy career can, at times, be a rollercoaster – but if you buckle up, you’re set for a rewarding experience. Take Rodrigo - he’s seen ups and downs during his energy career, but he credits these for his personal growth.

And you too will encounter challenges, unexpected opportunities and periods of self-doubt. In those moments, remember: “Change may not always bring growth, but there is no growth without change.” [1]

Since we last spoke to Rodrigo in 2021, he now leads a team of technical engineers and oversees global projects. But he admits he sometimes still doesn't feel entirely fulfilled in his career. It’s a feeling shared by many, especially when we live in a world where social media continuously invites comparisons with peers. But let's be honest – social media tends to highlight the best parts of someone's life and career while overlooking the struggles.

There’s value in enjoying your energy career

It's essential to embrace your whole energy career journey - the highs, the lows and the points where it doesn’t feel like you’re moving at all. Rodrigo shared that his leap to management has been challenging at times. He’s always the first to embrace a challenge, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be tough.

Rodrigo urges not to rush into senior roles just because it seems like everyone else is doing it. Every step, every experience and every challenge you face builds character, knowledge and resilience. Rodrigo’s top tips to managing your expectations while pursuing career growth include:

  • Setting realistic goals following the SMART acronym – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-based.
  • Defining personal success objectives - for example, becoming a more confident public speaker.

Remember, success is not a straight line; it's a winding path with detours and occasional setbacks. Embrace it all, and don't forget to celebrate your victories, no matter how small they may seem.

Take time to remember the person behind the job title

When striving for career success, it's easy to get fixated on job titles and the ambitious pursuit of promotions. We often overlook the growth and progress that can be made without an official change in title. Development, both professional and personal, is a treasure trove which enriches your life and career.

Rodrigo believes there's ample opportunity to grow as an individual during your energy career. He advises to:

  • Take the time to invest in yourself – attend conferences, workshops and networking events.
  • Seek mentors who can guide you and help you see the bigger picture.
  • Be open to learning from your mistakes, and don't be afraid to pivot your career path if it aligns better with your interests and strengths.

The energy industry is a realm of endless possibilities. It’s an industry that keeps evolving, pushing boundaries and addressing global challenges head-on. Your career is constantly evolving and there's immense value in enjoying the ride, even when it feels like you're standing still – that’s precisely what makes it exciting.

Remember, the energy industry is not just about powering society’s future – it's about empowering your future too.
