Applications open for the 25th intake of pioneering energy apprenticeship scheme

Legacy of OGTAP to continue with a new generation of APTUS apprentices

OPITO and the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) are calling for the next generation of energy technicians to apply to APTUS, formerly the Oil and Gas Technical Apprentice Programme (OGTAP), its prestigious apprenticeship training scheme.

This year OGTAP is rebranding with a new name, APTUS, meaning to adapt, to adjust and to be prepared. This reflects the evolution of both the programme and the entire industry as the energy transition gathers pace.

Now in its 25th year, it’s one of the most successful programmes of its kind in the UK, training technicians for a future career in energy, with an employment retention rate after completion of more than 95%.

The four-year programme gives the students industry standard skills and qualifications to deliver conventional energy sources as cleanly, efficiently, and securely as possible while charting the pathway to newer, cleaner sources and net zero.

As well as industry recognised qualifications, APTUS apprentices gain hands-on experience in the workplace, while earning a salary, and a job at some of the most innovative global energy businesses.

APTUS is jointly managed by OPITO, the global safety and skills organisation, and the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) on behalf of OEUK, industry operators and major contractors including CNOOC International, bp, Equinor, TotalEnergies, Wood, and Petrofac.

Since its launch in 1999, the programme has trained more than 2,000 apprentices in four key disciplines: instrument and control, electrical maintenance, mechanical maintenance, and process operations.

Successful applicants will undertake a three year and nine-month apprenticeship programme split into two stages. The first 21 months are based at one the participating colleges in Scotland. The following two years include on-the-job training with one of the sponsoring energy companies, where apprentices work towards achieving a Level 3 Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) at SCQF Level 7 in a chosen discipline.

The scheme creates industry-ready energy technicians who can install, test and maintain a variety of equipment. The call for applications is open until 1 April 2024, with successful applicants starting college in September.
